Preparing Your Child for Starting School
At Orchard Infant School, we understand the importance of preparing your child for starting school. Our goal is to help your child develop resilience, confidence, and a sense of safety and happiness as they begin this new chapter in their lives.
By creating a supportive environment and providing opportunities for your child to build relationships with their peers and teachers, we aim to ensure that they feel secure and ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with starting school. Together, we can help your child thrive and grow into a resilient, confident, and happy learner.
During the Summer holidays please prepare your child so that they can:
- Dress and undress
- Turn their clothes in the right way.
- Put on socks or tights
- Put their shoes on (the correct feet!)
- Toilet themselves independently
- Begin to use a knife, fork and spoon.
- Use a tissue to wipe or blow their nose.
- Fasten their coat
Build up your child’s social skills by:
- Giving your child simple instructions to listen and follow
- Encouraging them to have play dates
- Showing them how to share when playing a game together - not always winning
- Having conversations together
- Sharing stories together about starting school and friendships
Talk to your child about school
Talking about the exciting things your child is going to do at school helps them get over any nerves. You could:
- Walk to or past the school to familiarise them
- Talk about how fun school is
- Practise the school routine
- Share your own experiences of school (positive)
