Year R
Welcome to Year R
To Infinity and Beyond!
Our first project of the Spring term sees us launching into space! The children received a letter from astronaut Chris Hadfield, inviting them to train in our own Astronaut Academy. We started by reading Chris Hadfield's book 'The Darkest Dark' and finding out what inspired him to become an astronaut. Over the course of this project, the children will take on a number of challenges using all of the knowledge and skills we have learned so far to help them graduate from Astronaut Academy. Along the way, we will be finding out about our solar system and discovering what it is like to be an astronaut.

Let's Celebrate
Throughout this project, the children have been finding out about different festivals and religious traditions celebrated all around the world. We began by exploring some interesting objects inside our class curiosity container and talking about what we noticed about them. The children asked lots of questions about the objects inside, sparking their curiosity about what the items might be used for. We used the book 'Little Glow' by Katie Sahota and Harry Woodgate to find out more. Over the course of the project the children have found our about many traditions involving different kinds of lights which help people to celebrate, including Birthdays, Halloween, Diwali, Lunar New Year, Hannukah and Christmas. Finally, the children planned a special birthday party for Lola the Leopard using everything they had learned about special celebrations for the outcome of our project.

Roots, Shoots and Muddy Boots
The Year R classes have had a very strange delivery! A big box arrived in the classroom with a message which read 'please look after me'. The children thought hard and made predictions about what might be inside the box which needed caring for, making lots of great suggestions. After that, the box was opened to reveal a plant. The teachers were flummoxed because they didn't know how to take care of a plant. They set about finding things to care for the plant including a blanket, a coat, a handful of pasta and a milkshake. The children quickly set the adults right, explaining that plants do not need any of those things and shared their knowledge of what plants really need to grow and be healthy. Over the course of this project, the children will be finding out about plants and trees, looking closely at the changes they see during Autumn and finding out about how some local animals prepare for Winter.

Take a Look at Me
Our first project this half term in Year R is called 'Take a Look at Me'. This project will help children become familiar with their new classrooms, routines and school life. They will learn about our Golden Rules which help to make everyone at school feel welcome and keep us safe. The children will begin to make new friends and celebrate their similarities and differences when sharing their All About Me books from home. The children will begin to think about what makes them each special and unique such as our favourite things, our families and any special talents.
